Only a few days to exhibition…

Excitement building… Busy this week making final preparations for my first solo exhibition at Oriel Bach, Mumbles. The framing I’ve chosen is simple, square-section tulip wood made for me in St Ives, Cornwall.

The opening is next Monday evening 21 July at 7.00pm and the exhibition runs until 2 August. There will be over 40 oil paintings on show; most have been completed within the last year and have not been shown previously in public.

Burry Holmes is an island off the west end of the magnificent Rhossili beach, accessible only at low tide. There are the remains of an iron age fort and medieval chapel on the island.

A few of the many small oil sketches I made during my week in Provence. A good discipline for me working outside in sometimes difficult conditions – hot sunshine, changing shadows, strong gusts of wind (le Mistral) and even occasional downpours of rain!

En plein air, Provence

A happy bunch of fellow painters on my recent trip to Provence for a plein air workshop with Julian Merrow-Smith (pictured centre). More photographs and pictures of work produced can be found on Julian’s website: shiftinglight.com under ‘blog’ and ‘galleries’. A wonderful experience – good food and wine, beautiful location, lovely company and painting outside in the glorious Provencal countryside every single day – heaven!

Low tide, Solva.

This is a 30cm square oil painting I had framed recently. The boats are high and dry at low tide in a picturesque valley that leads to the sea in the ancient fishing village of Solva, Pembrokeshire. It is detailed and accurate, an illustrative style that I have been moving away from more recently.

Giving the old tub a lick of paint, at low tide on the Loughor Estuary at Penclawdd, Gower. This estuary is famous for its salt marsh lamb, and for its cockles. An 8inch square oil painting on gesso prepared board – another for my solo exhibition in Mumbles this July.
