Mist clearing, Rhossili

IMG_0022I think this painting is now finished. I’ve tried not to tighten it up with too much sharp detail to retain that misty feel.

Rhossili oil sketch

IMG_0021This is a 10inch square, quick oil sketch en plein air, a ‘classic’ view of Rhossili cliffs and Worms Head. It’s not intended as a finished painting. I’ve just blocked in the main shapes on a wet grey base, ‘wet on wet’. I like the subtlety of the colours (which have not reproduced well on screen), a simple primary triad palette comprising cadmium red, yellow ochre and French ultramarine as well as, of course, titanium white. I’m tempted to work into it and produce a more finished piece, but the danger is that I will overwork it and it will tighten up. Mmmm…. we’ll see, – watch this space!

St Andrew’s, Penrice, Gower

IMG_9826

St Andrew’s is a Norman church of the early 12th century, situated in the hamlet of Penrice, Gower, a mile or so from the sea at Oxwich Bay. It was renovated in the late 19th century at the expense of Miss Emily Talbot of Penrice Castle. It has an unusually long porch, shown to the left in the painting, which is thought to have been used as a school during the 17th century. I’ve drawn and painted this subject several times in both oil and watercolour. On this occasion I was attracted by the long summer grasses of the cemetery.

Rocky coast, St Ives

IMG_9291

This is a painting of the rugged coast near St Ives in Cornwall. It’s painted from information gathered on one of Gary Long’s short courses at St Ives School of Painting that I attended last year. It’s a 12 inches square oil painting on canvas board.

Winter Light, Mumbles (SOLD)

IMG_9136

This is an oil painting of Bracelet Bay and Mumbles lighthouse in January, 2016. I liked the muted colours of what was a cold, grey, squally day – not untypical of the weather in this part of the world! It’s 12 inches square on canvas board finished over two sessions in the studio.

Rhossili Cliffs & Worms Head, Gower

IMG_8952

The precipitous cliffs at the western end of the Gower Peninsula near the village of Rhossili. What is known locally as ‘the Worm’ is from the Old English ‘wurm’ meaning dragon, and is a mile-long promontory jutting out into the Bristol Channel. It may well have been mistaken for a dragon or sea-serpent by Vikings and other ancient seafarers rounding this coast in the mist.

Shifting Light, Cefn Bryn, Gower

IMG_8947

This is a small oil painting of Cefn Bryn on a dark November afternoon, with rain clouds scurrying swiftly across the sky, and a rare glimpse of the sun highlighting the rich warm winter colours on the hillside. Cefn Bryn is the Old Red Sandstone hill that forms the spine of the Gower Peninsula, running for four miles from Penmaen to Burry Green.

Oil painting 25.5 X 16cm (10 X 6.25 inches) on canvas board.
