Les Thomas – the painter's progress

This is a 10inch square, quick oil sketch en plein air, a ‘classic’ view of Rhossili cliffs and Worms Head. It’s not intended as a finished painting. I’ve just blocked in the main shapes on a wet grey base, ‘wet on wet’. I like the subtlety of the colours (which have not reproduced well on screen), a simple primary triad palette comprising cadmium red, yellow ochre and French ultramarine as well as, of course, titanium white. I’m tempted to work into it and produce a more finished piece, but the danger is that I will overwork it and it will tighten up. Mmmm…. we’ll see, – watch this space!
